Born to a musical family in the German city of Offenburg, Valentina’s father, uncle and aunt all played in the same band. From an early age she attended their rehearsals and even got to hone her talent at smaller gigs, while continuing to work on her voice in private. Until eventually, six months in Australia made all the difference. “I wanted something in my life to change and discovered songwriting. Writing a song is like embarking on a journey. You take off, seeking to discover and arrive at places you didn’t even know existed. That really fascinates me.” Songwriting was not the only thing Valentina chanced upon, while in Australia. She also met the employee of a German company managing artists the likes of Philipp Poisel. Once back home, they began working together.
Valentina recorded her first songs and has been playing critically-acclaimed shows in clubs and festivals on a national level, even opening for Voice of Germany winner Ivy Quainoo aswell as Maria Mena and Bernhoft. Following on the heels of her previously released EP “Giant” (summer 2016), “Paperheart” is another taste of what’s to come.
In the beginning of “Paperheart” Secretive, curiously raspy piano chords pave the way for a surprisingly driving beat that in turn leads up to an anthemic chorus. “I wanted to leave enough room for the song to breathe. The chorus has no words, but I feel like I’m saying all that I wanted to say.” And then the song explodes into a drum-ridden frenzy, waves crashing in, but the protagonist and her paper heart are safe and sound. That deep-seated feeling, that wide-eyed gaze: As Valentina Mér takes to the stage, be prepared to welcome an artist, whose vulnerability, authenticity and creative drive will be sure to leave music lovers in Germany and beyond deeply touched and yearning for more.
